Angels were powerful beings who served the gods. Wholly divine, incredibly intelligent, but limited in creativity and free will, angels were seen as messengers and, in rare cases, soldiers in the gods' war against the Prime Evil.

Orders of Angels

There were at least four types, or "orders", of angels, ranked in order of power:

  • Solars were the greatest of the angels, demigod-like in their power and essentially exarchs in their own right. It was said that only 24 Solars existed, although this was never proven.
  • Planetars were commanders of legions. A Planetar sent alone to the Material Plane often spelled trouble and doom, as they were reserved for the most serious of circumstances.
  • Devas were lesser angels, often making up Planetar companies in battle. These were the angels most often seen (which was in and itself extremely rare) by mortals.
  • Aasimar were not fully angelic, but infused with angelic essence, usually through a coupling. Most often, humans were the basis for aasimar progeny, though other Races had aasimar births. Not unlike mortal paladins, Aasimar usually were born into the world in preparation for a mighty cause or in anticipation of a world-shaking event.
