The Quintessence was the name used by a loose group of smugglers, partisans, and freedom fighters in the late Light Age. Despite many independent cells and operations, the Quintessence was said to be united under one cause: to end the dominance of the Glavian Empire.

This unifying cause looked very different depending on the cell of the resistance. Some groups, like the partisan fighters of the Lochhold highlands or the Bronze Armada of the dragon Pjirrik, waged open war against the Empire with mixed success. Quieter acts of sabotage by organized rebels showed defiance in "occupied" lands such as Duskwood and the Whispering Valley. Still others smuggled goods and people out of the Almanthan heartland, as was the case with Valenrode's Requisition.
