Dragons were powerful magical creatures, nearly as old as gods and titans. They were regarded as ancient, wise, and terrifying by smaller creatures, including the mortal races fashioned during the formation of Echelon. There were two types of true dragons: metallic and chromatic, which were good and evil, respectively.

Origins

It was not known how dragons first came to Echelon, but many scholars believed they arrived from a different planet in the Material Plane entirely. The original progenitor god of dragons, Asgorath, was said to have fashioned the first dragons from their own body even before the Material Plane had "set", or "cooled". It was believed that this act of creation sundered Asgorath's body into two "halves", or "children": Bahamut and Tiamat. When Tiamat betrayed Bahamut in the First War, she signaled to all the gods and primordial beings that she and her brood of chromatic dragons would be enemies of good for all time.

Categories

The two types of dragons were called metallic and chromatic, so named for the appearance of their scales. Metallic dragons had scales of luster and shine, while chromatic dragons had matte scales of primary and secondary colors. Metallic dragons aligned with Bahamut, while chromatic dragons followed Tiamat.

Personality

All dragons, regardless of type, were inherently inclined toward power. For a dragon, projecting force and strength to bend the world to one's will was not only necessary, but right. Dragons were almost always arrogant, believing themselves as superior to all others. Even good-aligned dragons viewed mortals with, at best, a critical eye. Metallic dragons almost never saw mortals as equals, but as creatures needing protection and guidance. Chromatic dragons viewed mortals with even more disdain- subjects, playthings, and slaves.
